Language Literacy Workshop

John M. Marshall Elementary hosted an Oral Language Literacy Workshop for parents and students on May 10. Participants learned about developing oral language through the use of close reading strategies, environmental print and oral family histories. The parents were eager to learn and expressed gratitude for the “pancake book” in Spanish and English, as well as the handouts with strategies for reading with their children at home.

Facilitated by Elizabeth Reveiz, director of ENL/bilingual programs, and Teresita Winter, community liaison, this workshop was the first in a series of three geared toward encouraging literacy development at home in both English and the student’s native language. The workshop was also designed to promote reading through the summer months. The series will be repeated for parents from September through November, and dates will be announced accordingly.
