For the third year, students at the High School participated in a "water walk" in which they carried two one-gallon jugs of water to the school and back during a class period.

Ms. Nelson's social studies class and Ms. Greene's ELA class prepared for the activity by reading Linda Sue Parks’ book “A Long Walk to Water,” in which 11-year-old Nya walks more than five hours every day to get water that she and her family will use for drinking, cooking and washing. Based on a true story, the tale reveals how, instead of enjoying her childhood and attending school, Nya must walk daily for survival purposes.

For students, the walk puts an unfamiliar reality into perspective, giving them a firsthand experience of what millions of young girls and women must do in order to survive.
